Weather on the N900

by Simon on May 14, 2010

I’m new to the MaemoFanatics team but not new to the platform. My first post (of many) will be a quick look at Foreca Weather and OMWeather.

I love being able to see what the weather is like, at a quick glance. Both applications provide a desktop widget with current and upcoming conditions.

Both applications feature multiple cities and locations you can switch to, quite easily. They both allow you to set the unit display, how often to update and the amount of days you want displayed.

ForecaWeather has a tabbed window selection when you launch into the application by tapping on the desktop widget. You’re brought into a list of the cities and can choose to view the conditions at the location.

OMWeather provides this functionality through a widget that can “page” through the different locations by simply pressing on the arrow while you’re on the desktop. Here’s a Toronto location, and North Bay. You simply tap the city and it will change.

When comparing the 2 widgets, both provide the same amount of information in a concise way. However OMWeather can use transparency, adjust colors, font size and the icons are user-replaceable. Fortunately for Foreca, it ships with an installation link to the applet with the N900 directly out-of-the-box, so many people use it without knowing of an alternative.

OMWeather is built and maintained by a member of the Maemo community (Pavel Fialko). It’s completely free, the source code is available, as well as community and author-provided patches – and it’s a lot more customizable.

You can follow the newest release discussion at the TMO (talk.maemo.org) thread and if you like it, let the author know and make at donation.

    Tried to run the command set in xterm, like you stated, but keep getting errors, "not foun
  • Remove OMWeather from the desktop. Open xterm and run the following;

    gconftool-2 --set /apps/maemo/omweather/alpha-component --type=int 0

    This will set ZERO alpha transparency, which is SEE THROUGH.

    Add the OMWeather widget back.

    how to change the transpercy in OMweather

    I tried using the gconftool and changed the settings as shown above, but nothing happened?!

    Is there a way to save the settings, do I have to reboot afterwards?

    I'm a newbie as well; what are the "exact" steps in plain English, to change the OMWeather settings so that they look like the examples above?
  • Check above in my comment.

    gconftool-2 --set /apps/maemo/omweather/alpha-component --type=int 45

    how to set the transparency for omweather? gconf location? sorry a newbie here..
  • Crap! The parrot and the weather widget in the last two screenshots make me want the N900... just those reasons alone. So clean!
  • Josh G
    Do you have a copy of that parrot wallpaper? It's really great
  • Here are some editable settings through gconf;

    There are 9 different layouts:
    gconftool-2 --set /apps/maemo/omweather/icons-layout --type=int 0
    You can set the opacity/transparency of the background here; values are 0-255
    gconftool-2 --set /apps/maemo/omweather/alpha-component --type=int 45
    How many days you want visible;
    gconftool-2 --set /apps/maemo/omweather/days --type=int 3
    The size of the icons, 1-5;
    gconftool-2 --set /apps/maemo/omweather/icons-size --type=int 2
    Background color of the widget, changes with opacity settings;
    gconftool-2 --set /apps/maemo/omweather/background-color --type=string "#000000"
    and to change the foreground/font color
    gconftool-2 --set /apps/maemo/omweather/font-color --type=string "#000000"
  • I was able to figure it out guess there was a combo of settings that need to be changed.
  • I'm glad to see I'm not the only one that felt OMW was much better than Foreca. I did an in-depth comparison of the two back in March at http://wp.me/pOhA7-bJ and while I liked both, I just liked how much more I get with OMW
