Note to the Nokia MeeGo team: The small things the Nokia MeeGo N– must not overlook

Ovi compatibility from day one.
Both Mac, PC and Linux

Everybody knows that not all Nokia mobile users are PC users, especially high end users like the current Maemo/MeeGo user base. Reluctantly I can forgave Nokia for not having Ovi Suite compatibility for the N900 from the get go because of the target audience. To make the same mistake for their 1st MeeGo device will be shooting themselves in the foot. For a desktop application built using Qt, a product promoted for its “write once to target multiple platform” approach, it will be a shame not to have it available and compatible with the new device at launch for both Linux and Mac OS.

Note to Nokia MeeGo team: Please make sure the Ovi Suite is available for both the Mac and Linux OS and while your at it be certain that the Nokia MeeGo N— is compatible with the suite from day one.

Improved Media player

Like it or not the ipod Touch media experience is the standard to aim for on any touch screen media device, now I am not saying it is the best,  just the standard is very good. This is also the reason why me and other N900 users still carry IPods around despite having 32GB of storage. Managing a music library over 2000 songs on the N900 compared to an ipod Touch is not the most pleasant of experiences. Symbian seem to have got the message and is heading in the right direction so MeeGo must follow suit.

(35 seconds in shows Symbian 3 Music Player)

Having read through the maemo.org blog, it seems that people have great ideas and suggestion (http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=40755)

Note to Nokia MeeGo team: Copy what you legally can from the iPod Touch media player, especially the way the music player has been implemented. There is no point in having a huge memory for music but having a below par music player experience.

Improved Media Syncing with Ovi

I must admit, though not has good as iTunes, media syncing on the Nokia phones has improved… for Symbian. However, it’s non-existent currently for Maemo and is one of the major reasons I don’t put music on my N900. Like many music fans I am very anal about album art and currently, whether it be Nokia PC Suite, Salling Media Sync 1.1.5 or Nokia Media Transfer non-does album art correctly like itunes.

Note to Nokia MeeGo team: The music and content management between your first Nokia MeeGo device must be on point. The end user does not want a third party solution, they would have already made a significant investment in getting the device. The end user does not want an iTunes copy, they just want a great painless experience in transferring their media to their new MeeGo device.

Volume control even when phone is sleep

To Zune, Creative and ipod users this probably one of the feature they take for granted but will affect their user experience in a negative manner if it was to be taken away. Scenario, how many times have you reached into your pocket to up the volume on your mp3 player using the volume rocker when a good song comes on without waking the the music player on the Zune or the iPod Touch?…… exactly. Now try that with your N900.

Note to Nokia MeeGo team: You claim to use Agile development methods in your projects (read any new Maemo/Meego job advertisement from Nokia), now I am not an Agile expert but I know this. In Agile, there is a concept that goes along the lines of, to improve efficiency quickly, target the small changes that will bring the biggest benefit. This is one of them.

More colorful sexed up UI as opposed to the dark geeky look

Although to me and to other maemo.org community members its perfectly fine, you have to admit that the maemo 5 UI is very dark indeed. I honestly believe for MeeGo going forwards, it needs a more lighter, more colourful on the eye UI to appeal more for the masses.

Note to Nokia MeeGo team: Just a bit more coloure and eye candy in the UI, that is all.

  • Email client most certainly.

and let's not forget - better e-mail client as the N900's current e-mail program can hardly be considered up to par with its competitors (i.e. Blackberry)
  • I would like to see Flash 10 support so I can play videos on all those sites that I can't now.
And please include MMS Nokia. - @C00L
