Mobile Geeks of Toronto

by Kyron on May 5, 2010

UPDATE: Unfortunate news outta Toronto, Tom Hall sent out a message a few minutes ago saying that the event has been postponed. It turns out that Samir has been stranded in Europe due to all air traffic being grounded over the past few days because of that volcanic ash problem. The new date is tentatively set for Wednesday, May 5th so we’ll be bumping this post shortly before then.

This coming Wednesday (April 21) brings the very first event by Mobile Geeks of Toronto, a local mobile enthusiast group. The event is being  organized in association with Nokia and will bring a special guest, Samir Agarwal – Head of Maemo Operations, Mountain View. Samir will be on hand to discuss everything Maemo/MeeGo related and take questions from those on hand.

Now I have already started on my list of questions but I would also like to know what our readers want to ask the man steering Nokia’s approach of Maemo. Post anything that you want me to ask Samir in the comments sections below and I’ll do my best to get the answers and post them along with pictures and videos from the event.

  • @EverythingBlaxx I'm curious to know if Samir mentioned any other Meego powered devices in the works, besides a phone. Maybe a netbook or some other gadget? Also... did he mention if they will just the Maemo name after the N900?
  • EverythingBlaxx
However, he didn't mention anything about who would be making these products. Someone asked about future Nokia Booklets running MeeGo and he said that it is something they are looking at.
  • EverythingBlaxx
He specifically mentioned that MeeGo will power netbooks, connected TVs, mobile computers (ie. phones), in-vehicle infotainment systems and media phones.

i like java games. will nokia enable java on the n900?
  • EverythingBlaxx
There is no chance of Java on the N900 or future MeeGo devices. They are trying to move away from Java
  • I want to know if Ovi Music (now that it is DRM free) will be ever coming to Maemo devices (my interest in N900)?
  • EverythingBlaxx
This is not something that will be coming to the N900. He didn't have an answer for future devices
  • Ask him when is Meego Full release and PR1.2 coming out :)
  • EverythingBlaxx
There will be a device out in 2H 2010 and the roadmap that he showed us (which you've probably seen before) says MeeGo 1.0 should be available in October. As for PR1.2, he said it will be out by the end of May barring any major setbacks.

short question: ovi maps--will it ever be updated to include all the features found in the s60 version? if so, when?
  • EverythingBlaxx
Samir and I discussed v3.0 of Ovi Maps which is included in PR1.2 (which Samir also had running on his N900 but it was an earlier version than the one that hit the internet last weekend). I pointed out that now that they have added Walk navigation to go along with Drive, the next logical step would be to add turn by turn voice navigation. He shot this down by saying to expect Nokia to keep updating the navigation experience, making it easier to search for places, find directions and adding services similar to Here & Now and Lonely Planet but don't expect voice navigation in this version of Maemo anyway.
